After the release of CAT 2024 Result on may, 2024, IIM Calcutta announces the admission shortlist with 1990 candidates for final selection round on January 6, 2024. IIM Ahmedabad admission shortlist focuses more on diversity. IIM Bangalore, IIM Kozhikode, and other IIMs shortlisting criteria also follows this trend. This marks a new trend at IIM shortlisting criteria leading to diversity in IIM classrooms.
IIM selection process?
The selection process of all the Indian Institute of Managements is rigorous and in order to clear the brain hammering process, students require a lot of preparation. Some IIMs have Group Discussion as an integral aspect of selection process while some like the IIM Ahmedabad do not conduct GD. They in place of it have the Analytical Writing Test (AWT) or Written Ability Test (WAT) Let us check out the selection process of IIMs.
IIMs will observe a two-step process for selection process of the candidates for admission to the 2024 batch of the PGP. These steps are-

In the final selection stage, selection is strictly based on the shortlisting of the candidates done separately for each category (General/SC/ST/NC-OBC/PwD) based on the Final Composite Score’s (FCS).

Waitlist Movement
Every year, lakhs of students apply for admission to MBA programmes offered by the IIMs. Since, the total number of seats of all 20 IIMs is about 4000, not everyone gets successful. Once the first list of selected candidates are announced, another batch of selected students are kept in waiting in case any student chooses to forgo their seat. The seat is then offered to the next best candidate. This list of students waiting for someone to give up their seat can be termed as waitlist.
IIM waitlist mainly consists of the number of seats that move up from the waitlist slab to offer. Each year’s observation shows, students wait long for the waitlist of IIM Ahmedabad (IIMA), IIM Bangalore (IIMB) and IIM Calcutta (IIMC) to move so that the chances of their admission get brighter. Nevertheless, the new and emerging IIM waitlist movement has also caught attention lately.
The waitlist movement in IIMs and some few top MBA colleges is category dependent. For the general category, it is extremely stringent, while for the SC, ST, OBC and PwD category there is some relaxation.
IIM Lucknow does not release waitlist. They instead of it release the merit list. For a student to secure their position in the merit list, they need to qualify the minimum requirement which is 12 out of 40 in the PI round.

Taking the lead after the CAT 2024 Result declaration, IIM Calcutta has released the admission shortlist. Total of 1990 candidates are called for interview with the percentage of female candidates approximately 43%. The shortlisted candidates can check their status by logging at IIM Calcutta official website with their CAT 2024 registration ID and email ID.

IIM Ahmedabad Shortlist: Announced on January 7, 2024
IIM Ahmedabad has been the front-runner to announce its admission shortlist. Minimum 1200 candidates are shortlisted by IIM Ahmedabad for the Academic Writing Test (AWT) & Personal Interview (PI). Out of them, IIM Ahmedabad shortlists around 565 candidates of General category; 317 candidates of NC-OBC; 170 SC; 100 ST and 48 PWD candidates. Total candidates considered by IIM Ahmedabad for preliminary screening is around 27556 and out of them, 1200 candidates receive IIM Ahmedabad call for the final selection round.

- Shortlisted candidates will have to attend GD-PI-WAT round conducted by IIM Shillong separately in different cities of India.
- Shortlist cutoff is expected to be 90 percentile overall and 80+ minimum sectional percentile.
7 New IIMs’ Shortlist: April/May 2024
- The seven new IIMs are IIM Amritsar, IIM Bodhgaya, IIM Jammu, IIM Nagpur, IIM Sambalpur, IIM Sirmaur, IIM Visakhapatnam.
- IIM Ranchi coordinates CAP 2024 in which some of these new IIMs may also participate.
- The IIMs those who participate in CAP 2024 will not announce a separate shortlist.
- The shortlisted candidates of these new IIMs will have to participate in the PI-WAT round through CAP 2024.
- IIM Nagpur, IIM Visakhapatnam will mostly not participate in the CAP 2024 and will conduct their own GD-PI-WAT process for admissions 2024.
- These IIMs will announce a shortlist in the last week of April/first week of May 2024 to conduct PI-WAT rounds.
IIM calls for Interview
IIMs call the candidates after completing the shortlisting process for GD-PI-WAT rounds. IIMs shortlist focuses more on the student quality which is not just through CAT 2024 exam scores. As such ‘profile’ plays an important role for improving diversity in the IIM classrooms. IIM Shortlisting criteria main focus is on the following 3 Parameters:
CAT 2024 Exam Scores: Each IIMs shortlisting criteria specify its minimum required sectional as well as overall percentile score.
Academic Profile & Diversity: IIMs shortlisting criteria awards weightage to excellent academic record till graduation and to the candidates coming from Non-Engineering background. Female candidates are also awarded weightage to promote gender diversity in the IIM classrooms.
Work Experience: A good weightage in the range of 5 to 10 percent is awarded in IIMs shortlisting process if a candidate has a work experience between 2 and 3 years in a supervisory cadre.
What is noteworthy is that hundreds of CAT 2024 toppers and candidates with 99 Percentile may not get IIM call for final selection round for Admission 2024 in the top IIMs. On the other hand, candidates with percentile below 90 may get IIM call due to their profile, academic diversity despite scoring low in the CAT 2024 exam as admission shortlist focuses more on diversity.
